Doug Eng is a native and resident of Jacksonville, FL. His love and interest in photography began in high school when he purchased a Minolta SRT-101. At college Eng studied Architecture and Civil Engineering at Cornell University, and spent many hours in the student union darkroom. After a 30 year career in engineering and software development, Eng returned to his passion in photography.
"My initial interests were in nature and landscape photography. There is a strong connection to nature within each of us. This allowed me to see what is not obvious. Recently I have been drawn to photograph people and our man-made world. My personal project, Photographers For Freedom, allowed me to know and photograph 25 families who had spouses deployed to Iraq. The bravery and spirit of these families was inspirational. Capturing the human spirit is the most elusive of all image making." Eng hopes to promote the idea that photography through personal projects can be used to help others. “First we must help ourselves. As artists, we need to feed our own creativity by creating meaningful work. Next, as citizens in a complex world, we must find a message, a cause, and a reason to photograph. It is that message that needs to be communicated through our art. When that message leads to helping others or bringing heightened awareness to a situation, our images begin to speak on their own, which is the point when an image begins to have meaning. Pursuing personal projects has allowed me to find my own inner voice. I can feel the difference when I shoot to shoot and when I shoot with purpose. This is a critical aspect of photography that I continuously work to achieve.” |
